Acronis True Image Workstation and Universal Restore
Today I finished the most painless laptop transfer in my history as an I.T. consultant. Acronis make available their True Image Backup and Restore software which allows for hardware migration. The normal procedure would take approximately 2-3 full days to complete and customise a new laptop which includes transferring settings and user data and the installation of applications.
This time around I took an image using Acronis, made a Recovery CD and waited the 2 hours for my image to be written across. Then it was just a matter of re-registering Windows and some software with new serial numbers and installing drivers required to make the new laptop work.
After about 4 hours I was back up and working again. Acronis can also work if your hard disk was to fail. In this instance its about 2 hours to complete recovery*. (*depending on the mount of data you have).

Image Resize Utility Windows XP
Ever needed to transfer a digital image only to find out that you need to resize it first?
There are many 3rd party programs that can do this for you, but they can sometimes be tricky to master.
Microsoft have released a free ‘Image Resizer’ tool as part of the ‘Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP’ package.
Taking only a few seconds to install , it integrates itself into XP and is accessed simply by right clicking on the image file and selecting ‘Resize’.
You can select multiple images and convert them simultaneously and use preset sizes such as 640x480 or your own custom size.
